Cambridge Organists Home Page

Saturday 5th July 2025

The organ in St. Augustine’s Church Wisbech was constructed by Richard Bower in 2004 (NPOR E01087) and based on the 1870 organ by Forster & Andrews completing its originally planned specification to which alterations and additions had been made over the years. The organ now comprises IIP/24ss with tracker key action and electric stop action.  We meet there from 10.30.

After taking lunch in an eatery outside the town, we shall move on to St. Mary’s, West Walton. This is a gem of a church with a detached 13th century tower and an interior of equal date. Sadly the church is faced with becoming a ‘festival church’, a euphemistic term for those churches whose future looks currently uncertain. So while we can, we have this opportunity to look inside and play an interesting IP/8ss organ whose history is far from clear. NPOR N06770 suggests the organ was presented to the church between 1831 and 1845 and rebuilt by Holdich in 1893 with some of its pipework of 18th century date. Kenneth Tickell renewed the action in a general restoration in 1995/6. I look forward to learning more about this interesting little organ.
